IgnitED Academy - Years 7 and 8

IgnitED Academy is an initiative developed by St Philip’s Christian College that approaches learning differently. It is a future-orientated learning program that acknowledges every child is a unique learner with different passions and interests. The program aims to focus on skill development and mastery at an age-appropriate level and asks young people to foster skills to become a life-long, autonomous learner.

The program combines hands-on learning experiences with real-world context to help students draw links between the world and their learning journey. The vision of the program is that students would renew their enthusiasm and agency towards learning, recognising that school isn’t about marks or remembering content, but is a place to discover the world around them, and to understand themselves as a uniquely made child of God.

IgnitED Academy is a project-based approach to learning that combines the core subjects of English, History, Geography, Science and PDH together into a project format.

In Year 7, students undertake the following core projects:

Project Legacy – A thematic study of the term ‘legacy’ through the lens of Ancient History, contemporary texts, and Scientific inquiry.

Project Green – Students dive deep into what sustainability means, and how we can live a ‘greener’ life through our choices.

Project Beyond – Students consider where we will live by 2051 when they are 50 by understanding factors for effective cities and sustainable living.

Project Bright Ideas – An exploration of marketing, entrepreneurs and how to start a small business.

Project Dream – A student-led personal interest project.

In Year 8, students undertake the following core projects:

Project Spotlight – A deep dive into the Middle Ages as a significant turning point for the world, and a celebration of all things artistic!

Project Influence - An exploration of factors that help shape who we are, and how we contribute to the lives of others. Students look at significant factors in their lives such as social media, sleep, and key figures of influence.

Project Legacy Part 2 – A continuation from Year 7, students move forward in history to cultures such as the Vikings and Shogunate Japan.

Project Impact – An exploration of some of the significant ways humans impact our world, from our clothing choices to the way that we travel.

Project Connect – Students engage in discussion about work environments, consider how to build CV’s and connect with a mentor or figure of influence in their life.
