NAIDOC Week is held across the country from 7-14 July 2024 in order to celebrate and recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. As a school we wanted to acknowledge this celebration this week with some special events.
Today, students in Years 3-8 enjoyed a cultural presentation by Tim Selwyn, (a Wongaibon man from Girri Girra). Students enjoyed hearing stories and learning about different aspects of Aboriginal history and culture.
Throughout this week, one of our Aboriginal RAP (Reconciliation Action Plan) members and a parent in our community, Gemma Wilson (a Gamilaraay artist), has been painting a mural for us.
The work celebrates connection to people and place, and to finish this piece we invited our Aboriginal Students to be part of this write their names and country on the mural. Students have loved seeing Gemma’s work come to life and we look forward to revealing more about this artwork in the coming weeks.
As we conclude this year's NAIDOC Week celebrations, we look forward to building on these events and continuing our journey of learning, respecting, and honouring our First Nation’s people, culture and history.
