Middle School Students Leading Change: SPCC's Fight Against Poverty

Taking Action Against Poverty

During the interview, Harry and Sofia shared their involvement in the school’s efforts to fight poverty, participating in events such as Crazy for Compassion Day, where students sported crazy hairstyles and socks while raising awareness for a serious cause. Fundraisers such as selling chocolates and slushies added to the fun, with proceeds going toward poverty alleviation efforts.

Sofia explained the importance of these events: “It’s more than just a day. These activities are helping us understand the challenges people in poverty face every day.” One standout experience involved a visit from Compassion, an organisation committed to child sponsorship. The students took part in a powerful simulation, folding paper cutouts into shapes representing food. If they didn’t “collect” enough, they didn’t “survive,” giving them a small glimpse into the daily struggles of those in extreme poverty.

Making a Difference One Step at a Time

When asked why the fight against poverty mattered to them, Harry passionately shared, “Everyone deserves access to a good education and proper medical care. No one should have to live in hardship.” His words highlight a belief in the basic rights of every person—a belief that drives his dedication to the cause.

Both students emphasised that while poverty is a massive issue, small actions can still make a big impact. Harry encouraged others not to be discouraged by the scale of the problem: “If everyone thought, ‘What can I do?’ nothing would get done. But if we all pitch in, we can make a real difference.”

Engaging Young People in Social Change

Harry also shared a brilliant idea to engage more young people in the fight against poverty through social media. “Since teens are always on social media, why not share posts that not only catch their attention but also spread an important message?” he suggested. He believes that social media can be a powerful tool to educate and inspire the next generation to take action.

Sofia echoed Harry’s call to action, encouraging young people to get involved in any way they can — whether by volunteering, donating, or simply raising awareness. “You’re not too cool for charity,” she said with a smile, reminding us all that helping others is always in style.

Dreams for the Future

Sofia and Harry also shared about their future goals. Harry has his sights set on becoming a professional golfer, with an impressive handicap of three, while Sofia dreams of combining her passion for fashion and business with charitable work. “I want to give back to the world in a meaningful way,” she said. Perhaps one day, she’ll launch a fashion brand that fights poverty — a beautiful fusion of her talents and heart for charity.

A Heart for Change

Harry and Sofia ended the interview with a powerful message: Everyone, regardless of age or status, can be part of the solution. Whether through donations, volunteering, or raising awareness, we all have a role to play in addressing the pressing issue of poverty. As Sofia put it, “Do whatever you can to help. Every little bit counts.”

As followers of Christ, we are called to care for those in need. The Bible reminds us in Proverbs 19:17, “Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and He will reward them for what they have done.” It’s inspiring to see these young leaders take this to heart and actively make a difference in their school and community.

Let’s follow their example and remember that no act of kindness is too small. Together, we can be the hands and feet of Jesus, bringing hope to those who need it most.
