Performing Arts at St Philip’s Christian College Cessnock
At St Philip’s Christian College Cessnock, the Performing Arts play a vital role in fostering creativity, confidence, and collaboration among students. From foundational music education to advanced performance opportunities, we cultivate an environment where students can discover and develop their artistic talents.
Music at SPCC Cessnock
Music is an integral part of the curriculum, with all students from Prep to Year 8 engaging in mandatory Music classes. For students in Years 9-12, Elective Music is offered, providing a deeper exploration of musical theory, composition, and performance.
Our College boasts three developing Stage Bands, each dedicated to one of our sub-schools, rehearsing weekly and growing in skill and repertoire. The Middle School Vocal Ensemble offers students a platform to refine their vocal abilities, while our weekly Lunchtime Music Club provides a supportive space for students to practise their instruments—whether as soloists or in small groups.
Performance is at the heart of our Music program, with multiple opportunities each term for students to showcase their talents during Assemblies and Chapels. Larger-scale events such as the College Spring Fair and Captivate Festival allow students to audition and perform in front of broader audiences. For our senior students, we have established connections with local wineries, offering paid performance opportunities that provide invaluable real-world experience in the music industry.
Many students also choose to enhance their musical skills through private tuition at the College. We engage highly skilled instrumental and vocal tutors from across the Hunter Valley, ensuring students receive expert guidance in their chosen discipline. Private tuition is available for:
- Piano
- Guitar
- Drums
- Vocals
- Bass
- Ukulele
- Violin
- Cello
- Flute
- Clarinet
- Alto Saxophone
- Trumpet
- Trombone
- Percussion (including drum kit)
Families interested in private music tuition can contact Freedom Music.

Dance at SPCC Cessnock
Dance at St Philip’s Christian College is a dynamic and engaging program, offering students opportunities to develop their skills and perform throughout the year.
In Junior School, dance lunch clubs are available for both boys and girls, fostering a love of movement and expression from an early age. As students progress into Middle School, they can choose to participate in the Da Vinci Dance Elective (Stage 3) or audition for the Middle School Dance Ensemble, which rehearses during lunch or after school. For students in Stage 5, an Elective Dance unit is offered, depending on student interest.
Our Dance students regularly perform at College Assemblies and Performing Arts events, gaining valuable stage experience and confidence.
Drama and Musical Theatre
The Performing Arts extend beyond music and dance, with Middle School students invited to participate in a biannual production—a journey that includes auditions, rehearsals, and live performances in a professional theatre setting.
Recent productions include:
Moana Jr (2022)
The Wizard of Oz Youth Edition (2024) – performed to sold-out audiences at the myPACC Theatre, Performance Arts Culture, Cessnock.
Students from Years 5-10 also have opportunities to audition for musical revue nights, providing a platform to showcase their talents and celebrate the vibrant performing arts culture within our College community.
At St Philip’s Christian College, we are passionate about providing students with the opportunity to explore their creative potential, grow in confidence, and experience the joy of performing.
